Customised holiday activities, tours and accommodation around Rome, Naples and Amalfi

What I offer

Customised vacations in southern Italy - accommodation, accompanied excursions and other activities.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of service I can provide, here is an example of one of several custom vacations that I organised during 2014, in this case for 6 persons.

Dining out in Gaeta

Example of a customised vacation based around Gaeta

The organised activities for this vacation occupied 7 days, but most groups stayed longer in order to relax at home or the beach and to make additional visits to Rome and Naples.
  • Accommodation in my vacation apartment in Gaeta, maid service included.

  • Home-cooked dinners every night and lunches except during the fullday excursions. Farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Loan of a cell phone to facilitate things such as being picked up from the beach early etc.

  • Transfers from and back to Rome airport.

  • Welcome lunch with drinks.

  • Tour of Gaeta with a boat ride (weather permitting).

  • A visit to the castle of Gaeta, the "split mountain" and other hidden treasures of Gaeta.

  • A full day excursion to Pompeii and the Naples Archaeological Museum with local guides and reservations to avoid needing to queue anywhere.

  • A full day excursion by fast train to Rome where my group were met on the platform by the local guide. Visits to the Vatican Museums, St. Peters, Trevi fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Lunch in Rome and a dinner ready at the apartment in the evening.

  • An excursion to Monte Cassino abbey and the WW II memorial. Cooking lesson with Enza in the afternoon - the products of our labours for dinner.

  • A tour of the Amalfi coast with stops in Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, including a visit to the 9th century Church of St. Andrew next to the cathedral of Amalfi.

  • Tour of a local vineyard with wine tasting.
Payment is in cash upon arrival.

full day excursion to Rome

Rome can be reached by train in one and a half hours or less, making Gaeta an excellent base for visits to that city. You can visit two or three major sights in Rome, with a break for lunch, and still be able to return to Gaeta for a tranquil dinner.

When I organise an excursion for you, the local guide will meet you at the train and tickets will already have been purchased so that lines at the ticket offices of popular sights are avoided.

Sights in the country around Rome.

Naples is a city of inexhaustable interest. It takes about an hour on the train to travel from Gaeta to Naples (our station is officially "Formia-Gaeta"). Usually, my guests take a guided tour on their first day to Naples and then make later visits by themselves. Naples was for long an independent kingdom and its piazzas, palaces, churches and castles make the historic centre endlessly fascinating. The Archaeological Museum contains one of the most extensive collections of Roman artifacts anywhere. And, of course, pizza doesn't come any better than in Naples!

More about the sights of Naples.

Visit to Pompeii

Pompeii is one of the major desitnations for anyone visiting southern Italy, especially if they have an interest in Roman history and architecture. We usually combine an excursion to Pompeii with a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Naples where many of the finds from Pompeii are displayed. We also recommend to engage a local guide at Pompeii in order to see and understand the main sights. This is not mandatory, of course. Doing your homework with a good guide book also ensures that you gain a good understanding of Pompeii and its structures.

The Naples National Archaeological Museum contains a large collection of Roman artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum, including works of the highest quality produced in Greek, Roman and Renaissance times. It is the most important Italian archaeological museum.

Excursion to the Amalfi coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet, but in high season, most people don't want to drive there! That's why I always recommend that you ask me to arrange for an experienced driver to take you on your excursion along this breath-taking route.

This excursion usually includes stops in Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, plus "photo opportunites" along the way. Garden enthusiasts should ask me if it will be possible to visit gardens such as those of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.

Visit to Capri

The Isle of Capri is reached by ferry from Naples and can be enjoyed as a full day excursion from Gaeta.

Capri is a magical place and has been for a long time. It was the home of the Emperor Tiberius for more than decade, and in the 1920's and 1930's it rivalled the French Riviera in popularity among expatriate aristocrats and writers. Axel Munthe's Villa San Michele is just one of the beautiful sights to be visited. If the weather is good, as it usually is, a boat excursion to the Blue Grotto is a must.

When needed, we organise a minibus or car with driver for you, from one of the firms that we know and trust. The drivers are fully licensed and skilled at their task. Whenever possible, we use the train but for trips to wineries and especially along the Amalfi coast we need a professional driver.

Our minibuses are modern, comfortable, air conditioned and equipped with a sound system so that you can hear what your guide has to say.

Cooking lessons in Italy

Italian cooking lessons are a perennial favorite for visitors to Italy, even when they have been here multiple times before, because of the huge variety of regional dishes there are in Italy. I arrange and sometimes even personally give cooking lessons based on the recipes I have learnt from my grandmother and mother. We often focus on the preparation of various kinds of filled pasta since these very popular everywhere but are difficult to get right unless you're shown how to do it.

Share a family dinner in Italy

To really experience the spirit of Italy, ask me to arrange a family dinner at my parents' home. Try our local specialities in a truly relaxed ambiance. There is definitely a tendency for restaurants to offer a somewhat standardised menu if only because much of what they serve has been prepared off premises. What this means is that to enjoy what we who live here actually eat, you need to be invited to a family home. I can arrange exactly that for you!

dining out in Gaeta

Dining out is always one of the great pleasures of a visit to Italy. And it's even better if you have local advice on where to eat. That's one of my services: giving advice to families staying in my vacation apartment or my tours groups on where to eat really well and economically.

Let me know what kind of foods you enjoy and I'll do my best to tell you about local dishes that match you tastes and which offer something different from standard tourist fare.
